[pct-l] Deep creek closure... why?

Technically it would be illegal. If the Forest Service catches you on a
closed trail, you could be subject to a fine. They might even escort you
off the trail.

Not that I'm planning to skip the detour, but what if I wanted to follow the
original PCT route. Is it legal?

This area of the trail always has slides that need to be repaired, but the
ones from this winter are huge and will require some re-engineering of the
trail. I was not aware of any major bridge damage prior to this winter.
There was some major damage to one of the bridges this winter.
I volunteer on the trail crew for this section. I have not seen the bridge
damage myself, but this is what I was told by John Hachey, the crew chief of
the Section C volunteer trail crew, who has seen the damage personally.

The project description mentions slide work, but I was skeptical about them
being able to repair all the slides within such a short amount of time. I
didn't expect them to work on the bridge, but wasn't the damaged bridge
already messed up before last hiking season?

That trail maintenance project is not intended to repair the big slides and
the damaged bridge. It may in fact actually get rescheduled until the major
repairs are done.

I'm sure they don't want people on it creating new trails and further
erosion until the trail can be repaired. The PCTA site shows that there's a
project scheduled for Deep Creek from May 12-15.
