I know bear canisters are bulky but after hiking through Southern California, 
the Sierra will seem like a reprieve in one sense: you don't need to carry 
nearly as much water, as it is generally quite plentiful. Thus, if you drop say, 
one or two liters from your pack, you will have saved betwen 2.2 and 4.4 pounds 
in weight. Thus, the bear canister "penalty" was barely noticeable, other than 
having to move things around the pack for the best fit.
