[pct-l] Will he be ready for a thruhike ?

Yes. unequivocally. 

That's the way I started when I was 58. 

I walked three blocks a day for a month. Got it up to a half hour. Then 2 mile "hikes" on weekends. In a 18 months I was doing 15-20 mile day hikes. 

The big thing for me was being willing to go from A to B, and letting Z take care of itself.
