Diane,
If what you said was only intended to be a joke, then all is forgiven.

However, it did not sound like a joke...it sounded like another of your
frequent swipes at "Heavy Truckers" by criticizing and ridiculing Yoshi.
Here is what you said..."I'm confident that he'll see the light one day.
But not until someone first writes an article about ultralight backpacking
in Japanese that he can cite".
Sounds like ridicule to me.

And now here you come again with...."and you all won't think Chuck and I
are the only whack jobs out there who wear trail runners instead of boots,
carry sub-20lb base weights or whatever".

You are so right you and Chuck are not the only ones.......now days the
majority of hikers, including me, do.
On my JMT speed hikes my base weight including tent, sleeping bag& pad,
cold weather gear, rain gear, compass, maps, 1st aid kit, flashlight,
knife, water purification, toilet articles, APP, and yes...potty trowel
is 7lb....with food and water, 22lb for the 210 mile trek.
So you see, I am lighter than you, but you don't see me criticizing you.
But, when I hike with the scouts or my wife I'm a "Heavy Trucker".

There are still plenty "Heavy Truckers" including many of my hard-core
hiking buddies.
They are "Heavy Truckers" because they are more interested in comfort,
eating healthier food, being better prepared and are capable of carrying
the heavier load.
That is their "preferred" way of hiking...not because they don't know any
better as you frequently have a tendency to infer.

Diane, gear recommendation is one thing.....ridiculing somebodies gears
selection is another thing.
There is no absolute correct way.
What works for you is the correct way for you.
What works for the "Heavy Trucker" is the correct way for the "Heavy Trucker"
Don't try to infer that your way is the superior way.

Somebody once posted the following on the list...."Da$#$#...my way is the only
absolute correct way......if you're not hiking my way you are not hiking the
correct way...Da$#$#"

You don't agree with that....or do you Diane?

I said that Hiro has a perfectly good reason to carry a heavy pack.
He carries stuff for his wife and camera equipment. And then I made a
joke that he'd go ultralight when there was a Japanese article to
site, which was teasing him because he frequently cites erudite
japanese articles on the topics he writes. Maybe you didn't see
my ;-) emoticon?

Anyway, I'm glad the returning hikers are posting again because now
there will be more realism when it comes to gear recommendations and
you all won't think Chuck and I are the only whack-jobs out there who
wear trail runners instead of boots, carry sub-20lb base weights or
whatever.
