I'm waiting to see a mountain biker try to ride DOWN the south side of
Forrester Pass. It'll be the fastest descent ever made.
And let us not forget the Gendarmes on the Mt Whitney Trail.
The list goes on.
I hiked the Colorado Trail from Denver to Breckenridge this summer. That
trail is open to mountain bikes for its full 480 mile length, although there
are strategic mandatory (enforced) detours for bikes around delicate
wilderness areas. I encountered dozens of bikers, and every one was very
courteous and yielded to hikers. They even offered water as most reliable
sources weren't. Yes, there were some sudden encounters around blind corners
where we both did the dance of death, but we have that on the PCT as well.
Ever meet a pack train on Hypothermia Ridge in the Goat Rocks? It's a long
walk back along that knife edge to the beginning to let them pass.
