[pct-l] JMT rock

It's embarrassing to think of how many times I have hiked past this landmark and never even knew it was there. It is just off the trail, right in the open, and if you're looking for it, it is easy to spot. PCT mile marker 855 along the San Joaquin River just inside KCNP's northern tip, not far from the Muir Trail Ranch. A photo is at the Mountain Education Facebook album-

The question for everyone is, was it really created in 1917 as is carved in the rock? Does anyone have the history on this?
