Just found this little article in a health newsletter I get. FWIW, says
flip-flops and sneakers are better for one's feet than stiff shoes in most
cases.

> Flip-flop to prevent joint pain
> Flip-flops and sneakers with flexible
> soles are easier on the knees than clogs or even special walking shoes,
> a study by Rush University Medical Center has found. And that’s
> important, because loading on the knee joints is a key factor in the
> development of osteoarthritis. The study showed that flat, flexible
> footwear is better for knee joints than more supportive shoes with less
> flexible soles. Barefoot participants also found relief from joint
> pain. For the elderly with osteoarthritis, walking in flip-flops may not
> be practical, but flat, flexible shoes may be a smart choice, according
> to the study in the journal Arthritis Care & Research.
