[pct-l] Emergency Devices

Just keep in mind that any true emergency will take longer to activate via a
SPOT than a sat phone or PLB. According to the Air Force Captain (these are
the guys that watch the whole country for emergency beacons) who taught a
National Response Course I attended a few weeks ago, the best way to get
help right now is via the PLB or sat phone.

Definitely - get the SPOT. I used one in both 2008 & 2009 and was able to
successfully send my wife "I'M OK" messages every night when I got to a
camp -
all the way through from border to border. All of my messages got through
and
that gave my wife great peace of mind. I also had a cell phone along but was
rarely able to use it while on the trail. The SPOT also has a "I need help
from
friends" button, a tracking button (your family could follow your progress
in
real time every 10 minutes on Google satellite pictures of your location)
and,
very important, a "911" button for a real emergency.

Subject: [pct-l] Emergency Devices

I am planning a PCT NOBO thru hike in 2011. I have always prefered to
communicate to family that I am ok by calling using a calling card when I
get to
town. This is my first long hike and my family is strongly encouraging me to
carry something for emergencies. My family would like me to carry some kind
of
emergency device. They are willing to pay the cost. I am curious as to what
others have carried ( cell phone vs SPOT) and the pros and cons of these
devices
or others.

Thanks,

Dan
