You won't need a fancy electronic device to figure that out. After a short
time on the trail you'll know how far you travelled with a fair degree of
accuracy. A set of maps, a watch and map reading skills are all you need.
Still though, I think we've figured out that there's no way you'll be talked
out of carrying a solar or inertia charger on the trail. That's probably
due to fear or inexperience, and that's okay. If you pay attention while
you're on the trail, I'm sure you'll quickly figure out that you can do
without using battery powered electronics all the time. I know I still
learn a lot every time I spend time on the trail.

figuratively speaking? I know there aren't markers on the trail. I'll be
using the GPS to alert me when I've hiked another mile.
