[pct-l] Shoe life on Trail

Good morning, James,
I agree with Radar. Twice I’ve hiked from the border to Kennedy Meadows on
one pair, but I probably should have changed at Mojave instead. Changing no
later than KM will assure you have good tread depth remaining to ease
walking on snowpack.
In the grand scheme of things the difference in cost throughout the trip
isn’t significant if shoes are changed at 400-500 miles vs. wearing them
till they flop. As a result many change at Hiker Heaven.
Support for one’s feet should not be overlooked. Over time, the foam
undersoles become less resilient and less able to reduce shock.
New shoes are great, but the good ‘ol pair is often very comfortable and
such a habit to use, that the duct tape, patched laces, floppy soles, and
miscellaneous holes and cracks have become old friends.
