I used four pairs of shoes on the PCT.  I think 4-5 pairs is common.  I've seen people wear trail runners for up to 1000 miles but they tend to look more like hunks of duck-tape at that point rather than shoes.  Most trail-runners seem to have a life time of 600 miles or so.
