There are only a few on the trail in June.  The numbers pick up as July passes and peaks in August due to people wanting to avoid snow and Mosquitos (which can be bad in July).  My personal favorite time in the Sierra is September since after Labor Day, the crowds and bugs are gone.  The nights are cold though and I was once snowed on in mid-september though it melted off in a day or two.
