In April 1977, we were hiking a day behind Monte. We just scooped up the
puddles of sweat he left on the trail.

Actually...
The route was different then, as much of the trail in SoCal had not yet been
built. Where the trail now hugs the ridgelines, parts of the '70s route
followed existing jeep roads and trails that tended to be lower, passing by
natural water sources, ranches, homes, cattle troughs (lots of cattle
troughs!), roads, and small stores. For example, instead of going up into
the San Felipe Hills (or Volcan Mountain; thanks for the history review,
AsABat), the route went up the San Felipe Valley to the west. That took us
past the Banner store, a creek in SF valley, past a ranch house (with a
spigot right near the trail, IIRC), to the highway with some homes. In this
way, at least, the trail was easier back then.
