For what it's worth! Snake bite has been successfully treated in the field
with Vitamin C....mega doses,  but a friend had a horse bitten in the face
by a cotton mouth and she gave the mare the recommended amounts of vitamin C
and although her horse did suffer a swollen nose the mare survived and is
now fine. This needs to be the powdered kind and hikers can easily carry
enough for one treatment. See

I haven't tried this but am prepared to if either of us gets bitten (my
horse or me) I carry the powdered with me at all times (PCT included) 
This has been used by sheep herders for years...
