I want some sort of waterproof layer under me every night. It also keeps my sleeping system out of the dirt.

A side benefit for those of us using inflatable pads - it's a little extra protection from punctures. Those tiny holes can be extremely hard to find, even when immersed in a creek. I hate waking up to reinflate my pad several times a night.
