Dear Adam,
Three pounds of rifle/ammo would not be worth carrying IMO, but in WA there are beautiful Blue Grouse that look like cartoon images of roast fowl to a thru hiker. They never go very far when flushed. Four different hunters have told me that it is super easy to dispatch them with a rock then dress them in less than 30 seconds by grasping their legs while standing on their wings (breasts towards your legs) and pull. This method leaves you with two breasts ready to cook. Haven't tried it myself, but every time I see those birds, I tell them how lucky they are that I'm not hungrier.
PS, The amazing and prolific high mountain blueberries and huckleberries in OR and WA have a huge nutritional punch and are loaded with antioxidants--way healthier than meat.
Sincerely, Lollygag, 2010 sobo hopeful
