Yes, the problem here is with the archives web site, not with the people
sending emails.

Ideally you shouldn't ever put hard returns into your text unless you
already know how your recipients are going to display the text and how wide
they want it.  Which, of course, you don't.  Emails can be displayed on
anything from a phone to a 30" wide-screen monitor.  It's the responsibility
of the receiving device to line-wrap the text appropriately.  Inserting hard
returns just messes that up.
