I normally used a plastic 8oz water bottle to carry it on the trail.  I reused the bottle for several weeks though I did replacement them occasionally.  I'd buy the smallest bottle at the store (some sell 8oz bottles) and transfer it to my bottle.  Whatever didn't fit was offered to any hikers around and if there were no takers, the remainder was thrown into the local hiker box.
