I hike with a Mariposa Plus and It works fine for me, although I could use something just a little bit larger. With a BV500 it is hard to get the rest of my stuff in it. The four mesh pockets are a big help. I got some little slide-on compartments that go on the waist belt where I put my camera, snacks, sun block and Deet, etc., stuff I may want to get at without unloading my pack every time. I also got some holders for small Gaiter Aid sized bottles that go on the shoulder straps. These along with my platypus keep me walking instead of stopping every time I want a drink. Without water or food my base weight is about 12 lbs. The trick is to make sure that you can get all your equipment, clothing and supplies in the pack. Some people use a front pack for extra gear and I understand that can also assist with your weight distribution and balance. I have never tried that on the trail myself.
