It also pays to register with the local ranger stations or pull permits if required.

Specifically, on our 1980 trek, we signed in at Idylwild before heading up -- if I recall correctly -- the Devil's Slide Trail. It was comforting to know, as we sat socked in at the top of Mt. San Jacinto during a spring blizzard, that people knew we were up there. A quick notice to authorities before we took the tram down to the desert floor prevented a search and rescue mission.

 

Likewise, when we were in the hot tubs at Reds Meadows when an earthquake shook, and evacuated, Mammoth, people knew we were out there, somewhere. As proof, when we hiked back into the deserted town and  asked locals what happened, one said "and some hikers are in the backcountry." "That would be us," was our reply. A quick trip to the local ranger station closed the loop.
