I don't know about other models of Leki poles or other makes.  However 
mine have a very good quick-release / safe-release so that excessive 
pulling on the strap separates it from the pole.  Only happened once as 
I recall and was probably good that it did.

with my hands thru the straps I can just let go and my poles hang from 
my wrists. Straps are adjusted by a hook-and-loop ("Velcro") closure. 
Also I can just click the release on the handle to detach the straps 
from the pole to free my hands.

I don't know if Leki still makes such an useful strap setup.
