I always found that they were 1 more thing to keep track of. And since they
didn't fit in my pack they became a pain. Now I know where they are --- in
my gear closet.

My trekking poles have been gathering dust in the closet for several years
now. The only use I found for them was stream crossings, but there's always
an "organic" alternative available for that purpose.
I just found them to be more nuisance that anything else. But of course,
YMMV.
