[pct-l] for all you old foofs that like to reminisce

I certainly enjoyed the ads, not to mention browsing some of the articles of this magazine. Amazingly, this edition was one that my buddies and I perused while we were planning our 1980 through-hike while eating dinner at -- appropriately named -- Tres Amigos restaurant in Costa Mesa. The ads hit home. I wound up carrying a Jansport pack, bought a Pentax System 10 camera (not a good purchase since 110 film became extinct and I still carried my steel-bodied Asahi Pentax 35 MM SLR), learned about Gortex, ordered food from Mountain House and shopped at REI. For the ultra-lightweight crowd, the Jansport wedge tent on page 32 is what I carried. Also note the comment about the Jansport D3 being designed for hikers carring 35 pounds or more.

This magazine was one of the few references for people planning through hikes.

The whole concept has come a long ways, witness the estimated 500 who will attempt to through hike in 2010 and the great information that is shared on the pct-l backcountry net e-mail lists.

Good luck to all who plan to hit the PCT in 2010. Enjoy the comraderie, enjoy the planning, and use the wealth of information available to make your journey safe.
