Hello,

I've been on this list for a few weeks now, but this is my first time posting.  I'm planning a PCT thru-hike for next year and thru-hiked the AT in '06.  You all have been a wealth of knowledge - thanks!

As for the toothpaste, I carried travel toothpaste on the AT.  In my opinion, whether you carry toothpaste or baking soda doesn't matter as long as you have something.  The few hikers I knew who figured they'd cut an ounce off their pack weight by leaving the toothbrush and toothpaste home, regretted that a couple weeks later when their teeth were all fuzzy and gross.

Also, I even carried floss.  I duct taped a needle to the container and it doubled as my sewing kit.

Do you have to mail a Color photocopy of your passport to get your Canadian
entry permit, or will a black and white photocopy of your passport work?  I
know a license won't do.

I was also curious  as to what everyone does for toothpaste on the trail?
Travel size toothpaste?  Special soaps?  No toothpaste necessary?
