MTR is well aware of this philosophy and apparently they are not willing to be a drop-in food pantry for those who can't or won't plan ahead, no matter the time of year.
It is the policy at MTR to allow access to the hiker boxes ONLY to those hikers who are actually picking up the resupply bucket they had sent to MTR in advance.
Be forewarned.

Just FYI
I've crossed paths with thru-hikers on a budget who planned on
significant food replenishment from the hiker discards at MTR. They
came away disappointed - couple of guys were running on fumes due to
that miscalculation. While there can be a lot of stuff there during
prime JMT season, its too early for much to be available to the
average thru-hiker.
