[pct-l] Southbound Questions

So if I understand this, if you are Canadian and you plan to hike  
southbound, you can get in trouble for crossing the border via the  
trail. There's no permit you can get?

What do they do when you drive across the border? Do they mark your  
passport? Could you drive across, get your passport marked, drive  
back and then start the trail?

Sorry if I'm dense. I'm just curious.
