For those who read Jon Krakauer's book, it's easy to understand why McCandless only had a cheap road map, not a USGS map. For nearly 2 years he had survived amazing experiences depending only on his instinct and luck. Accordingly, he was way too self confident and greatly misjudged the rigors of the Alaskan bush. Hubris can kill you and Chris McCandless is a perfect example. By the way, the documentary of his experiences is entitled "Call of The Wild" by an independent filmmaker named Ron LaMoth. It is very interesting and worth the cost. You can find it on-line. BTW, read the book and skip Sean Penn's movie. It is nothing more than cutesy Hollywood crap.
