Pardon the pessimism, but it keeps sounding more and more like 2010 will be a good year to hike southbound. You might get lucky and they'll have most of the closures re-opened by the tie you reach them.

Alternatively, start your northbound hike June 01 from either Mojave or Tehachapi, both of which have good bus service to and from Bakersfield. Come back next year and do the first 566 miles of southern CA, sections A-E.

This also allows you to start later than usual; good news for all you new grads or school teachers who can't get off until June. Good news too for Donna and the other southern trail angels normally inundated by the sweaty, stinky masses of hiker trash falling off the trail onto their doorsteps. Here's a chance to grow new grass, and take care of all those other projects that have been hanging fire for several years. Maybe even - dare I say it - take a vacation with their significant other.
