Andrea,
People getting lost on the re-route? SOBOs or NOBOs? I can't imagine anyone getting lost on the re-route over Boulder Pass and Little Giant. It is one heck of a difficult hike, more difficult than any other 50 mile stretch of the standard PCT, but even so the trail was reasonably marked when I hiked it in 2006. I can't imagine any NOBOs getting lost on the re-route after the snow clears.
Back than I debated which way to go, but I was very early in the season and very few people had come through either way. As for beauty, I understand the original route is beautiful, however, make no mistake, with the exception of the 3 mile dirt road walk into Trinity, the re-route is very beautiful as well.
Personally, I hope to do a loop hike in the near future around both the original route and the original detour. I think this would be a wonderful loop hike to experience both sides of Glacier Peak Wilderson.
In addition to the original route and the official detour there is also the alternative re-route which is Jonathan Ley's route, though there is a fairly significant cross-country climb up and over a very difficult pass.

Yeah, I remember you telling me this.
I was there when Mr. Zip was there. Do you remember him? He was going
on and on about the big log over the river. I tried to keep quiet,
but I think I worried about it more than he did. You told him to stop
being a wuss and that if a 10 year old little girl could do it he
could do it. I still didn't think I could do it. I've seen what those
10 year old girls can do on the balance beam!
But I weighed everything I heard. Your stories of people getting lost
on the reroute and having to get rescued, Southbounder
recommendations (they all recommended staying on the PCT), the
ranger's recommendation (she swore she hiked that reroute all the
time and it was "God's country") and everything I could find. I
finally took the regular PCT and was so happy I did.
