[pct-l] Whitney Permit

Jim,

To the best of my knowledge, the Whitney Permit that the PCTA provides is
actually for use of the Whitney Portal Trail on the eastern side, and does
not apply to the JMT on the western. The Portal Trail is one of the most
popular trails in the world, and permits to use it during the peak season
are issued via a lottery through the USFS. You don't need to go through all
that with a valid PCT permit in hand.  The Whitney sticker that the PCTA
issues lets you use the Portal Trail down to Lone Pine, circumventing the
whole lottery thing.  Here's what's on the PCTA website: 

Mt. Whitney Permit:
The U.S. Forest Service has implemented a $15 reservation fee to climb Mt.
Whitney, exit and re-enter the Whitney Portal on the east side. Plan to exit
and re-enter within 48 hours. Reservations for Mt. Whitney must be received
at least 60 DAYS prior to the expected date of entry into the Mt. Whitney
zone. Requests received less than 60 days in advance will be returned.

If you want to go up to Whitney, you still have time to get your sticker
from the PCTA.

I'm a little confused/nervous about the Whitney Permit.  I sent off for my
thru permit the other day and did not send $15 or make a reservation for
Whitney.  It was my understanding that since I will be approaching from the
west via the PCT (not Whitney Portal), that I didn't need to get a permit
for Whitney.  I've read a couple permit descriptions lately on various web
sites that make me question this.  Am I okay?
