Hi Matt,
The Ursack originally did not have an aluminum sleeve, so without the  
sleeve is how I have always used mine. However, I do not have any  
stories to tell of near bear experiences. A bear has never bothered  
my food in the wilderness. I did use it on a Whitney trip once and  
the marmots didn't get into it.
