This is probably not the answer you want to hear but thru hiking will cost u however much u want it to.  I spent $2900 on the AT last year but i know a couple who spent 20K on theirs.  I am budgeting for $3500 on this trip.  I think I'll have around $500 left over when I'm done.  I don't think I'll spend too much time/expenses in hotels, because that's not why I hike.  Ya a hot shower is nice but I prefer a swim in a lake or stream.  
You could try to do it for cheap, but some of the sacrafices you'd have to make might have negative effects on your hike.  You could certainly save money by eating ramen every day but I think the lack of nutrition would catch up with you.
