A part of this story may be a "figment of my imagination."  Last year  
I hitched from Scissors Crossing to Julian.  I got a ride from a nice  
guy in a nice pick-up.  He offered to buy me a beer and we stopped at  
a small bar in Julian.  He locked my gear in the truck and proceeded  
to one of the local "watering holes."  Once inside we watched the  
Kentucky Derby at the bar while enjoying a beer.  I needed to find a  
room for the night.  My "un-angel" suggested I leave my pack in the  
truck while he had a few more beers, this was so I wouldn't have to  
"lug my pack around town."  The situation did not seem sinister at  
the time.  I just said that Julian is small and I was used to  
carrying the pack.  His intentions may have been good but I later  
thought my gear could have been easily "hijacked" by that stranger.
