[pct-l] section d closures

Canoeman & Bob,

We are definitely in a wait-and-see mode on the reroute for 2010. The forest
orders from the Angeles call for closure through September 2010:

www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/

While there's no predicting what the USFS will do, note on the link above
the information on Rowher Flat, an OHV area, which burned two years ago.
This fire was started about a mile from us by a child playing with matches.
They closed that area for TWO years, and it was nowhere near as pristine an
alpine environment as was burned in the Station Fire, which already has
endangered species closures.

According to the San Bernardino Forest website, the section from I-15 (Lone
Pine Canyon area) should be open as of November 9, although I haven't yet
seen this reflected anywhere else (i.e., the PCTA website).

My understanding is they are still seeking alternatives to an extended
roadwalk around the Station Fire closure, and are justifiably concerned
about hiker safety. They are also concerned about announcing an alternate
right now, because this winter's storms are expected to bring further
devastation in and below the burned areas. The El Nino predicted for this
winter is really the wild card. They've already seen substantial debris
flows from rainfall a few weeks back.

Road walking may wind up being the only option for those who want to walk a
contiguous line from Mexico to Canada in 2010 and perhaps beyond.

If those planning their hikes for next year know they won't want to do the
potentally 45+ mile roadwalk, and hitch around most of D, they may want to
seriously consider how that will impact their Sierra entry date, and
therefore their start dates.

All of this reminds me of California's four seasons: earthquakes, fires,
mudslides, and riots.

Giving thanks for all my blessings on this day and every day,

L-Rod

Parts of the section D might be still closed next year. I understand from
Donna
S that the forest service and the PCTA are working on this right now.
As of right now, the section from lone pine canyon to blue ridge is closed,
as
is the section from Islip saddle to Acton.
were waiting to here from PCTA and forest service about how they are going
to
handle this.
