I can relate to this pretty well --- I too have morton's neuroma in one
foot, and am having surgery in less than a week where about an inch of nerve
will be cut out, other treatments having failed. I don't know if alternate
shoes would have helped this.

I wore (and still wear) Golite brand shoes because they have a wide toe box
--- if you look at at them from top or bottom you see that they're shaped a
lot more like actual feet are, and I'm a big fan of that. I like this
approach better than getting a generally wider shoe in some other brand; I
don't need my shoes wider everywhere, just in the toe box. In my particular
case, it's bunionettes that cause me pain if my shoe isn't wide enough in
front (the neuroma happened on the PCT in 2008).

Of all gear selection issues, shoes are the hardest thing to get right. I
too have several boxes of shoes, a couple boxes of an older model that I can
no longer buy in my size, and a few of a couple of newer Golite models that
I tried out this year.

Hmm, the footwear section of the PCT FAQ isn't filled in yet, some more
general comments from this thread might be helpful to add in ... <ducking,
running for cover>
