FWIW, sharpie ink can be removed fairly easily with alcohol.  If anyone
reads this who is section hiking or starting late, perhaps they can bring
along a rag and extra alcohol to clean up the markings.  They say the best
way to stop graffiti is to clean it up ASAP.
