My mom had both done at the same time. The reasoning was that  
sometimes by doing only one at a time the tendency is to baby the new  
knee too much thus delaying recovery. I guess doctors don't agree on  
which is best. Anyway, my mom is in her mid-60s and before her double  
knee replacement last summer she could barely walk and now she hikes  
6 and soon 9 miles at a time! She was not a big hiker before, so this  
is pretty huge.
