I believe they're kangaroo rats from the pictures I've seen of them.
Kangaroo rats are just adorable and "rat" seems a misnomer.

I have a great photo of Mama & a baby, from my 05 section hike thru  there. 
I think someone had a shot of them in one of the ADZ CD showings.
