Facebook is a website where you sign in and post little updates or
thoughts or links. You add other facebook users as friends and then
follow their status updates. It has a messaging system like email, live
chat, and a bunch of little games, applications, and quizes.
(i.e. define "social networking" by example, without using the works
"social" or "networking")
Facebook has a huge user-base and is very active right now. I wonder
how long it will last, but I've added a lot of friends from high school,
college, and travel that I lost track of when I moved away.

People are also using facebook to network, date, connect over hobbies,
and organize politically. I think of it as an internet inside the internet.
