You will need a passport to return to the United States, unless you turn around at the border and walk back the way you came (in which case you don't need the Canadian Permit).  If you cross the US border at Vancouver - they will ask for your passport.  Hiking the PCT doesn't give you special rights.  Everybody who tries to enter the US at any border crossing needs a passport now.
