I used Emergen C in the Grand Canyon last year to immediate and amazing results.? Nuun will be at the KO to sell and show off their "pop, pop, fizz, fizz" tablets of electrolytes that?I have used in my field work to good results too.

BTW, Meadow, I took 158 days in '77 and was considered one of the fastest then!!!? I know, laughable now.?

This year I'm taking the train from Boston to San Diego. I'm leaving April 19th
and will be going through Chicago on the 20th. Just wondering if there will be
any fellow hikers on there as well. It's going to be a 3-day grind and some
company would be nice.

Anybody know if any towns along the trail have check cashing services? Maybe at
liqour stores? If so, is it more common or rare along the trail? I haven't been
able to find this in any of the guide books.

When I feel the need (sweating profusely) I use Emergen-C.

Somewhere in this inane thread, which I've only barely browsed, I
noticed my name. And now it has been connected with hiker chicks,
singing and hula outfits. I don't want to go to the Kickoff anymore.
I am a 44 year old, overweight, socially inept, unattractive woman

with hairy legs and B.O. I'm not a "chick" by any means. Or a doo-wop
girl. I'm NOT going on stage. I'm not going to sing. I'm NOT going to
wear anything revealing. I'm just going to hide in a corner somewhere
and pretend I'm somebody else.

You men have all the luck. If only I could grow a beard to disguise
myself.

Good morning, Diane,

I must tell you, with your declared attributes you will not stand out among
a bunch of hard-core hiker trash. In fact considering the wide variety of
people attending, most will probably think you?re in insurance sales or
something equally ?square?.

meadow Ed here...................
In looking thru the original Sthekin log book? for many years past i noticed
something odd.
We now talk about folks leaving for Canada late april or later. Well in the good
old days beore the 90s folks were leaving late March and realy early in april,
lots of them around the first. Many of these folks took 6 months to reach
Canada. Of course this was in the "good old days before trail Angles" guide
book, decent maps and even before Jardine. Someone at the KO can check this out
and make a graft out of start and finish dates.... be interesting to see the
average time in those days, its well over 120 + days i am sure....

Hi, Robert -

My mom used to work right near the YCC camp at Mammoth in Yellowstone and I
grew up summering in the Park. If you need any info, etc., feel free to
email me off group. My parents still have a lot of contacts in the area.

One thing commonly used by ultra-marathon runners (typically long-distance trail
runners) is S-caps by Suceed.? I've used their products with success.? No pun
intended.? You can buy their products online.? There also is some information
available there as to how much to take per the amount of water you take in.? In
addition to keeping yourself in dry socks and other things, keeping your
electrolyte intake balanced with the amount of liquid you are taking in can help
quite a bit in reducing blistering over long distances and in extreme heat.

Hi Claudia and Fuzz,

I have used S-Caps as well. I am susceptible to hyponeutrima, caused
by a very low electrolyte/liquid ratio. When I would get to town and
drink a lot of cold water or sodas or any liquid, my electrolyte
levels would plummet, and I had some severe reactions. Also along the
trail. Balance is critical. At one time I took too
many S-Caps, and
could not slake my thirst, no matter how much water I drank. If you do
use it, please experiment.

Walk well,
J J
