Well, in the Irish wooden flute world there is at least one wooden  
flute on a "world tour." The maker sent it to someone who sent it to  
someone else and so on. The idea is to try the flute out for a while  
and pass it on. But a musical instrument isn't the same sort of thing  
as a backpack. People tend to take good care of instruments, for one  
thing.

Perhaps someone with a backpack would lend it out for a weekend trial?
