[pct-l] Bear Canisters

Good afternoon, Lindsey,

The problem of habituated bears is largely confined to the Sierras, and then
mostly within the big National Parks. There have been numerous careless
and/or thoughtless hikers to give the bears a taste people-food, and NP
managers have been reluctant to deal with the miscreant bears. That’s why
few hikers carry a bear ‘can before Kennedy Meadows --about Mile-700. Last
year I put my ‘can in the loan program and the folks that used it wanted it
send it to the Saufley’s rather than to KM. Having another box sent to KM
means an additional pick-up charge while a box sent to the Saufley’s or to
the Mojave or Tehachapi post offices is free to pick-up. I would not be
willing to carry the darn ‘can an additional 250 miles from Agua Dulce just
to save a pick-up charge.
