[pct-l] JMT permits

Details on those Rentals:
1st come, 1st served...so if U go without a can, they simply may not have
one avail, and then UR SOL...this is especially true during peak season.  As
everyone should be aware, EVERY OVERNIGHT stay in many areas here in the
Central CA Area, requires a Canister...so during peak season, lotsa
'tourists' do short a 2 day, 1 night short trips or whatever.  Most of these
people usually rent them either cuz they may not need one till next year, or
simply bcuz it's CHEAP, and so in Yosemite, please don't expect to walk in
on the 4th of July weekend (or most of July-Sept for that matter) and think
that they're gonna have a pallet of these things waiting for U.  U'd be wise
to buy UR own, especially if U overnight regularly.

Why not go from south to north instead of following all of the lemmings? The
only downside is that you finish in Happy Isles surrounded by tourons. Trail
Pass does not have a daily quota, where other trails into the backcountry do
have limits. In '06 I met backcountry rangers at Glen Pass, at Woods Creek
bridge, above Evolution Creek, and a park ranger in Tuolumne.  All asked if
I had a permit, and all checked to see if I had my bear can.  I found all of
my encounters with the backcountry rangers to be extremely friendly and
welcoming, but then, I was following the rules!

I know the Interagency office in Lone Pine, as well as the ranger station in
Tuolumne, had Garcia bear cans to rent (cheap).

On the other hand I have been checked 3 times in one day on the JMT in Lyell

Canyon on a busy weekend. But Josh is right, you probably wouldn't get
checked.

I simply have to have an answer to these questions. And the hikers who have
been on the JMT will probably know.

I am one of those hikers hoping to land a walkup wildness permit, since the
online reservations are fully booked for August for Happy Isles, Tuolumne,
and other early trailheads. Everyone wants to depart in August.

I understand the wilderness office(s) will try really hard to get you on the
trail the day you walkup. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that each
office can just "stamp" the permits for any trailhead even if it's not the
one you are at currently. And I can hardly believe that if I'm at Happy
Isles and the only opening they have is from Tuolumne that day that they
REALLY make the hiker get transportation to Tuolumne to begin the hike. Are
there park rangers at every trailhead, checking permits before allowing each
hiker to step onto the trails ? (seriously, are there?) How much do you
think the fine could be if I have a permit and they find me on the trail
before the place my permit allows me to be? :) Has anyone BEEN fined and for
how much ?
