[pct-l] oregon hwy 242 closure

A check of the ODOT web site re: Hwy 242 closure shows the closure listed
as: "The west side of the highway, also know as Highway 242,
will remain
closed to all vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic until
mid-August. However, the east side of the highway, between Sisters and
Dee Wright Observatory, may be open to traffic sometime in June. But
once construction begins around July 6, this section of highway will
also be closed to all traffic until the work is completed in
mid-August." Since the trail crosses near Dee Wright Observatory I'd say you're okay. At very least, a slight detour of a few hundred
yards may be necessary.

> This is a potential problem for thru-hikers on the PCT this summer (2009). Roadwork on Hwy 242 has closed the road to ALL traffic (hikers too) west of Dee Wright Observatory. There is a section of PCT that runs along that portion of Hwy 242, before it leaves the road to head north. That section of the trail is thus not accessible due to the roadwork. NOTE that due to the very rough nature of the large lava bed along both sides of the highway, there is no option of going cross-country and avoiding the road that way! So plan accordingly.
