Not necessarily. For short distances, I did not collapse my poles. It is
a little klunkier, but it works.

I tucked them under my shoulder strap near my waist, then hooked the
handles into the unused water bottle holder on my shoulder strap. It
worked well, even with the poles full length, but was a little tidier if
I collapsed the poles.

I prefer hiking without poles, but my knees dictate otherwise, so I
tucked the poles when I could. It was easy to pull them out and resume
using them when I needed to.
