[pct-l] PCT MONUMENT

After a long exchange of emails over the last year I have just received
permission to restore the monument. Looks to be in bad shape but I think I can
save it for a few more years. Why replace it when its not needed? Will be
camping at lake morena sometime first week in feb for two days to restore it.
Also hoping to do the hotdogs for all again this kickoff. Should anyone have any
questions you may reach me at 626-272-8794 or _PCTPANAMA at aol.com_

When Earl Schaeffer first hiked the AT, he was incensed to have to pay a
nickel to cross the Bear Mt Bridge (also essentially the low point on the
trail.) On one of my first section hikes, we finished a section there and wanted
to go out on the bridge for the view. The toll was up to 25 cents. My
partner didn't want to pay, so we negotiated/whined and the toll taker agreed to
accept 25 cents for both of us to go half way across the bridge. I probably
would have paid 25 cents out and 25 cents back, each. so we may have gotten a
75% discount. Shortly after this trip they gave up collecting from
pedestrians. I'm not sure how proud I am of my part in this progress.

I was rather profligate in my spending last year. This year I won't
be. My data entry and retail jobs this year haven't exactly padded my
savings account. It sounds like at least Patti is also trying to hike
on the cheap.

In trying to figure out how to save money, the only thing I could
really come up with is not spending the night in hotels. Hotels
themselves are not necessarily all that terribly expensive, and if
you share a hotel they can be quite cheap. But they invite going out
to eat and staying extra nights.

If I use town stops simply to resupply and get back on the trail,
maybe stopping for one good meal filled with healthy veggies and
fruit, and using a sun shower when I'm craving cleanliness, the hike
shouldn't cost much more than being home and out of work. There would
be the added weight of carrying the sun shower and some soap, but
that doesn't sound too bad.

The other thing I think I wasted money on was mailing things. I
mailed a lot of things home that maybe I would have been better off
just throwing in the trash. The bounce bucket was expensive, too. I
really relied on it, but perhaps I can do without it. Or rather,
without a specific one that follows me the whole trail.

Other than that, I can't think of anything that would really reduce
expenses. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Tell ya what Patti, if I get there before you do, I'll leave 50 cents with
the toll taker to pay your toll. Let me know where you are towards the end
of
July; I'll be at trekker4 at pocketmail.com from mid-June
to mid-September (yes, they'll sell you a 3-month subscription). If you get
there before I do, I guess you'll just have to wait for me. Hell, I might
even
buy you a "tasty beverage"(copyright Yogi).

I walked right across the Bridge of the Gods in '05 in the middle of
the day with no one stopping me or asking for a toll. The person in
the booth even gave me a friendly wave and smile. Also tried to cross
Bear Mtn. Bridge last August on a day hike but was turned around by
the $1 toll (had no cash on me) The teenage girl in the booth was an
unmoveable force not to be trifled with. Put an abrupt end to that
hike. At the risk of starting a coastal war, sometimes it's true what

actually my friend George is in charge of that section and has reported
several months ago. It's a matter of funding...of course...all amounts to the
dollar! If u check out my journal u'll see me posing on it when me and George
were there...he took the pics mostly to show the wear and tear on it for the
council or whoever it is he shows it to. I just wanted to have my pic taken
there...LOL. We're hopin for replacement before the kickoff! If ur interested in
helping out with maintenance on the trail...give me a shout and I will have
him send u an email with the schedules....

I was down at the Mexican border and the PCT monument several weeks ago.? As
a
professional backpacker, I signed the trail register and then noticed how
much
in disrepair the monument is.

Who is supposed to take care of the monument?? I would think it would be in
great shape, but it is not.? It needs wood repair and painting.? Who put it
up
anyway?? Was it the PCTA?

It would be cool if before the April Kickoff and all the hikers starting
north,
it was made to look good.? That check should be done each year.

Thanks, Switchback

If someone builds a new one, maybe they could incorporate a
solar-powered wireless web-cam that departing hikers could activate to
record a clip of their first steps North....if the Monument is a PCTA
responsibility, they could probably earn a few $'s selling videos and
screen-caps to hikers.

[ This is the first installment in a series of first-hand accounts of acts
of heroism and/or bravery experienced on a thru-hike.
It is our hope that through these stories hikers will be more aware, chose
to be more prepared, and have a safe time out there.
Names will be changed, if requested, and wherever possible, the author's own
words will be used. Enjoy. ]

Snow-1:

This is a very typical account of an accident in the snow. What sets it
apart is that it happened at night.

What Happened:

"I didn't make it very far past where the deep snow started, about 10-15
miles past the climb out of Weldon, (I'd have to look at a map after all of
these years) which was *very* lucky for me. I had never snow shoed before, and
was way overconfident, a combination that would have made me one of the first
fatalities of the PCT had i made it much farther before getting injured.

"Embarrassingly enough, i had to leave the tent in the middle of the night
to go to the bathroom and postholed right into a branch under the snow and
fell over the hidden log, tearing up my knee. ...crawled back to the tent,
wrapped the knee up, and eventually limped back to Lake Isabella, and then Mohave."

The Details:

"Well, i guess that the biggest mistake that i made, other than being young,
bullheaded, and way overconfident, was not having any guidebook. I'm not
even sure that i was aware that there *was* a guidebook. I had the USGS topo
maps, the June 1971 national geographic article, and a roadmap from a gas
station.

"The first thing i did when i got back to the tent after i stopped cussing
was to wrap it in an ace bandage and prop it up on my pack. It really, really
hurt and all that i had was some aspirin and that helped keep the swelling
down, but i remember having to untie the bandage when it got too tight.

"I know it was at least one whole day that i stayed in the tent, since it
was snowing, and it may have been two: not really sure after all of these
years. I remember waking up in the morning after the storm was over, and the sun
was out, and i thought, well, nobody's coming up here, and if i don't get
going I'm going to eventually run out of food and then I'll be too weak to go,
and I'll die.

"So, i pondered what to do with 15 days of food and fuel, and decided it'd
be really stupid to leave some behind, because something even *worse* could
happen, and then I'd die for sure. I made a crutch out of a branch, and tied my
pack to my waist with paracord and dragged it on my pad, but that didn't
work so great, so i ended up carrying it, which really hurt. I was *so* glad to
get to where the snow ended, cause then i knew i could make it out, even
though going down that steep grade hurt just as much as the snow.

"I think that i was probably delirious for quite a while, but i seem to have
a guardian angel, or two or three perhaps, that saves me from my own
stupidity, because I've been in similar jams in the Grand Canyon and on the Barrier
Islands and in AK, and have somehow survived. I think that a perhaps
overlooked mortality factor may be when someone like myself is lucky over and over
again, it's tempting to think, 'hey, i can (jump that
gap-ford-that-river-pull-in-front-of-that-tow-boat) do that: it didn't get me last time, or the time
before.

"I think that i was a little too full of myself on the PCT, since I'd gone
GA->ME on the AT the year before, and had spent many, many weeks in the GC by
myself, ever since i was 16, so i thought that i could do anything. I'm much
more objective now.

"As you already know so well, disaster can strike like an unseen, angry ratt
lesnake, but carelessness and hubris are like magnets that crash into each
other when they get close together. It's amazing how something so simple that
we all learn in first-grade can save us from ourselves: Stop, Look,
Listen....to which we have to add: then think about what's going on.... Hey,,,,i think
that i may have just plagiarized Buffalo Springfield...! ooops."

Footnote:

"I obviously only sprained the knee severely, didn't tear any ligaments
completely out, although, it's bothered me off and on ever since."
