Switchback replies: When you are hiking along the hot trail you will want anything that will protect you from the heat.  An umbrella is excellent.  Here is another great idea.

Go down to the local drug store.  Go to the small bottle/container section.  Buy a very small spray bottle.  It will weigh under one once.  Fill it full of water.  Now you have a portable air conditioner.  When you get hot, just spray the fine mist of water on your face.  You will be instantly cooler.  A LOT COOLER.
