I understand...i'm very inclined to stealth it most places. But the High Sierra anywhere near the PCT is NOT the place to stealth it. The bears will get your food, they'll end up dead, and you're hike will end up done. Or worse. Definitely get the bear can.
There was some on-trail dispute about whether a canister was necessary north past Sonora Pass through Tahoe/Echo Lake. I sent mine home from Sonora Pass. Others carried it further north. I didn't hear of anyone having bear problems further north though, so to do it again, i'd still send mine home at the first possible post office north of Yosemite. Further north than that, you don't need to worry, but in a couple of places some common sense will be good. For example, in Lassen, if you're in a valley near a trailhead or popular campground, hang your food counterbalance with your pots and pans warnign system, or better yet just don't camp there. But, it's not like the trash bear threat in Yosemite.
