Sounds a lot like my experience on the AT, the LT and a dozen overnite or
multiday winter hikes last year in New England. I've never needed my
synthetic insulating layers while hiking, though I get cold quickly when i
stop. I usually remove sweaty layers soon and often don my synthetic
insulating pullover (Patagonia Micropuff) right away though I don't always
need it if I put on dry layers.
I too love my Montane Aero Windshirt (3.0) oz for trapping heat and blocking
wind and lite rainspray. The half zip allows plenty of ventilation or zip it
up to trap lots of heat. Add a (far less breathable) rain/wind shell with
hood and I'm pretty warm even with mega wind/rain while hiking. (I was
tolerably warm even in -5F below on top of Mt Mansfield, VT with 35-40mph
wind New Year's Day). I wear only a single poly or smartwool short or long
sleeve under windshirt. (and pants, of course. shorts mostly in summer
rain/wind; rain/wind pants over poly or smart wools for much colder days)
